Estimates on the SARS 2026/27 tables, primary rebate only, before UIF.

Why your payslip tax might be wrong

  • • Your employer doesn't know about your retirement annuity outside the company.
  • • Medical aid you pay yourself isn't credited by payroll.
  • • You changed jobs mid-year, so two employers each taxed you as if you only worked part of the year.
  • • You have a travel allowance and haven't kept a logbook.

Each of these usually shows up as a refund — or a nasty bill — when you file. See what SARS may owe you or why you might owe SARS money.

Common questions

How much tax do I pay on a R25 000 salary in South Africa?

On R25 000 a month (R300 000 a year) a taxpayer under 65 pays roughly R3 700 a month in PAYE after the primary rebate, before medical aid credits or retirement annuity deductions. Enter your own figures above for an exact estimate on the current SARS tables.

How much tax will I pay on my bonus?

Your bonus is added to your annual salary and taxed at your top marginal rate, so most South Africans lose between 26% and 45% of it. Add your bonus in the calculator above and the tax on it appears immediately, or use our dedicated bonus tax calculator for a full breakdown.

How is PAYE calculated on my payslip?

Your employer annualises your monthly package, applies the SARS sliding tax tables, subtracts your rebates and medical tax credits, then deducts one twelfth of that each month. That is why a bonus or a mid-year raise changes your monthly tax.

What salary is tax free in South Africa?

For the current tax year you generally pay no income tax if you earn under about R95 750 a year (under 65). The threshold is higher at 65 and again at 75 because of the extra rebates.

Does this calculator use the latest SARS tax tables?

Yes. It uses the SARS individual income tax brackets, rebates and medical scheme fees tax credits for the 2026/27 tax year, in South African rand.

Why is my take-home pay lower than this calculator shows?

The calculator shows PAYE only. Your payslip also has UIF (1%, capped at R177.12 a month), and may include pension, medical aid, group life or garnishee deductions taken by your employer.

Do I still have to file a return if PAYE was deducted?

Often yes. Filing is how you claim retirement annuity, medical and travel deductions that payroll never applied — which is where most refunds come from. AfriTax members get a registered South African tax practitioner to file for them.
